Patent-pending lithium

synthesis process.

“The way ammonia is made today emits around 1.5% of our global CO2 emissions - This is a problem

A schematic of the NitroVolt process. It shows water, air and electricity as inputs and ammonia as output. The water is electrolyzed into hydrogen, the nitrogen extracted from air and then they are combined into the Nitrolyzer to make ammonia.

The technology

The technology relies on our patent pending lithium-mediated ammonia synthesis reactor we call the Nitrolyzer. The final system will only require air, water, and green electricity to synthesize sustainable ammonia directly at the point-of-use.

The modular units can stand at the customer site, such as a farm or greenhouse, generating the necessary ammonia on demand. The technology is easily scalable, and fits the customers daily demand from a few hundred to thousands of kilograms of ammonia.
Four panels showing the steps of the lithium-mediated ammonia synthesis as explained in the text box underneath.

The process

The process happening inside the Nitrolyzer unit is based on the reduction of lithium salt to metallic lithium. This metallic lithium will then react with nitrogen to form a nitride. The nitride is easily protonated by hydrogen sourced via water splitting. This leads to the formation of ammonia, and the lithium is released back into solution, to be recycled and start the reaction again.

This process happens continuously in our patent pending flow-cell reactor, making ammonia on-demand.

Frequently
asked questions.

What is ammonia?
What is ammonia?
Ammonia consists of one nitrogen and three hydrogen molecules, and is one of the most commonly produced chemicals in the world.
What is ammonia used for?
What is ammonia used for?
Roughly 80% of all produced ammonia is used for fertilizer. The rest is used as refrigerant gas, waste water purification, the manufacture of plastics, explosives, textiles, pesticides, dyes and many other chemicals.
What is the difference of grey and green ammonia?
What is the difference of grey and green ammonia?
Grey ammonia is produced via the use of fossil fuels, and today leads to about 1.5% of our global greenhouse gas emissions. Green ammonia must be produced using renewable electricity and non-fossil fuel containing inputs.
What sort of ammonia does NitroVolt produce?
What sort of ammonia does NitroVolt produce?
Our Nitrolyzer system produces green ammonia, using just air, water and renewable electricity. There is no CO2 emitted during the production process of our decentralized ammonia.
Is the Nitrolyzer only for agriculture and farming?
Is the Nitrolyzer only for agriculture and farming?
Our Nitrolyzer system can be used for any processes and systems that require ammonia on-site in amounts between 150-1000 kg per day.
What sustainable development goals do you aim to fulfill?
What sustainable development goals do you aim to fulfill?
NitroVolt aims to fulfill the UN sustainable development goals of 2) zero hunger, 12) responsible production and consumption, and 13) climate action.
